Toy Story 5 Teaser Sets Woody and Buzz Against a Tablet Computer

It has been 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and introducing viewers to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the plot but keeping viewers wondering how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Toys

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a brand new plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with him. And what about Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before departing for his fresh path was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her outfit.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the group.
