Top Selection

The Substance

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold satire tackles the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics and the feared consequences of growing older. Demi Moore presents an inspired performance playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star demoted to starring in an aerobics show on TV. Pushed out thanks to her unscrupulous employer her manager Harvey, she undergoes an enigmatic and gruesome treatment known as "The Substance". This produces a new version of herself named Sue, resulting in an increasingly parasitic dynamic among both women. This Friday, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque story stars the talented actress playing Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for a hiatus from writing about world issues to join an opulent ship with an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her husband, plus additional filthy rich passengers. But after an enigmatic female disappears from the ship during the evening and all passengers insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Out now, Netflix

Presence

Steven Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities with this innovative ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of the spirit. After a clan including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their recent residence, the camera – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the poltergeist, and the entity appears guarding her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor fully commits to his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a self-obsessed celebrity named Nicolas Cage who accepts a $1m payday to visit a festive event in Mallorca for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by government spies to gather intel on the potential kingpin, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. Saturday 11 October, evening, Channel 4

The Black Phone

Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective without requiring a follow-up. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has left the children anxious. When Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he dreads a terrible outcome. However, the non-functional line in the room keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, as the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic about the fallen televangelist and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who declares at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple commence monetising the American public's religious faith. It's a spectacle of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, however Jessica Chastain succeeds to show the character in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, on Film4

Black Bag

This period's another release by the same director presents a intelligence thriller as sharp similar to the collars sported by Fassbender's UK spy.
