The New Mayor Pledges a 'Dawn' for NYC in Inaugural Speech
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.
Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”
Adhering to Socialist Convictions
Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.
The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.
A Costly Platform
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:
- Universal childcare
- No-cost bus transit
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating Political Dynamics
The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.
The Basic Tests of Governing
Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
