A Forecasting Platform Participant Profited $Nearly Half a Million on Bets Predicting Maduro's Downfall.
A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.
Changing Odds in Predictions
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the president had been seized.
A single trader, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a initial bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
However the odds had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other individuals also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Regulatory Scrutiny Grows
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
A bill put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Prediction markets have grown significantly in the United States, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to politics.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.
A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
